Chart Advisor: Sellers Return
Over the past two decades the market has opened a new year by closing its first session in negative territory only eight times. While four of those years ended higher than they started and the other four ended lower, investors experienced a choppy and volatile market during the month of January in all eight of those years. Stock markets seem to recoil from uncertainty and so far, 2021 has brought less certainty in every area describable. This is probably the best explanation for today’s widespread selling which didn’t seem to be prompted by any single news item in particular.
Nasdaq100 (NQ) Weekly MACD Trying to Negatively Cross
The Nasdaq100 (NQ) is trying to form a red weekly candle to start the year, struggling just below the late December record high. Significantly, NQ broke yesterday below upchannel support (on the 4hr chart), and is vulnerable to retesting upchannel/ascending wedge support (on the daily and weekly chart) in the next day or so on any sign on Jan 6 that the US electoral vote count doesn’t proceed as expected, or if the contesting spills over into dramatic civil unrest.

Chart Advisor: Trading the Turns
When the year winds down, some institutional investors may decide to manage tax expenses by selling shares of selected stocks in their portfolio. Such a tactic may help them contain tax payments within the year of their choosing. This behavior in turn, has a significant impact on the market around the end of the year—or so the story goes. However, such notions may be nothing more than that: a story. At least that’s what authors Lynch, Puckett and Yan had to say in their study published in the Journal of Banking and Finance. Their paper makes the case that institutional trading behavior revolving around tax management, though it likely exists in some form, is not a significant influence in the markets.
