Bundesstaaten, Städte und Landkreise fordern von Unternehmen der Pharma-Industrie viele Milliarden von Dollar zurück, die sie für den Kampf gegen Opiat-Abhängigkeit und Überdosierung ausgegeben haben. Zuvor hatten bereits einige andere Konzerne einzelne Vergleiche erzielt. Eine umfassende landesweite Einigung, mit der Tausende Klagen in den USA beigelegt werden könnten, steht indes noch aus. Dem “Wall Street Journal” zufolge befinden sich die seit über zwei Jahren laufenden Verhandlungen von McKesson, AmerisourceBergen und Cardinal Health sowie dem Pharmariesen Johnson & Johnson über einen rund 26 Milliarden Dollar schweren Vergleich mit US-Bundesstaaten und Gemeinden kurz vor dem Abschluss. Es gehe zunächst aber nur darum, den vorläufigen Rahmen für einen Kompromiss abzustecken, berichtete das Finanzblatt am Dienstag unter Berufung auf Insider. Den US-Medikamentenhändlern und -herstellern wird vorgeworfen, Schmerzmittel unter Verschleierung der Suchtgefahren mit rücksichtslosen und aggressiven Methoden vermarktet zu haben. Damit wurde aus Sicht der Kläger ein wesentlicher Grundstein für die verheerende Opioid-Epidemie in den Vereinigten Staaten gelegt, die in den vergangenen Jahren laut US-Behörden zu Hunderttausenden Toten durch Überdosierungen führte.
